So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter (2 Thess. 2:15). Guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid the godless chatter and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge, for by professing it some have missed the mark as regards faith (1 Tim. 6:21-22).

When and where are you most yourself?

We are most ourselves when we are in communion with the Lord Jesus. We are most true when we worthily receive the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. To be worthy, we need to be made clean in the Sacrament of Penance. In other words, we need to be in a state of grace to receive the Body and Blood of Christ.

From among the people there present in the Mass, the people surrounded by the company of angels in the Presence of the Lord, are those who hear a voice calling them to draw near to the Lord and serve His people. Called out from those called out (ecclesia) of the world, the man hearing this invitation to serve is cast into a unique encounter with the Lord and His Church.

Bear brothers: if you find yourself most at peace, even in the midst of noise and haste, serving Mass as an altar server, then perhaps, young man, you are called to the priesthood.

If you notice that you are most grounded, i.e., most balanced and aware of God's goodness and mercy, even while you might be nervous or distracted by legitimate immediate obligations, then perhaps, young man, you are called to the priesthood.

The sanctuary of the Lord, with the Blessed Sacrament and during the celebration of the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, is the most wonderful place to hear the whisper of grace that leads one to service. In a world full of "opportunities" and "promises", the most direct answer to a longing heart, a heart yearning for meaning and direction, is the obvious one: 'You are here in the presence of the Lord'. Stay, and enter into the Lord's service!

Pray; act. Be not afraid. If you are reading this and the thought which resonates deeply within you is 'Why am I hesitating?', then know this: God is listening. Are you? Are you present to signs which offer affirmation of a path that is leading to the priestly service? Do you desire to be close to Jesus in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass? Go! Follow Him, your Lord and Saviour!

Speak with God as with a friend. So saith Saint Alphonsus Liguori. Not just any friend, the one Friend Who knows you and sticks with you through thick and thin! In the colloquial, spill your guts to the Lord. If you are already doing that, then know this: you already have the answer to the question 'What am I meant to do (with my life)?' Now you must ready yourself for the answer which God provides.

Put yourself in the hands of the Lord. Contact a (faithful) priest and ask Him to point you in the right direction. Most dioceses have vocations directors. Search online at your local diocesan website.
