So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter (2 Thess. 2:15). Guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid the godless chatter and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge, for by professing it some have missed the mark as regards faith (1 Tim. 6:21-22).

News from the Fellowship of Blessed John Henry Newman (Ordinariate): Missa de Sancta Maria Magdelena; Saturday Rosary.

Healey Willan's Missa de Sancta Maria Magdelena (ed. H.E. Darke, Oxford Church Music) was introduced yesterday into the Sunday Divine Worship at the Fellowship of Blessed John Henry Newman, Victoria, BC. The occasion marked the first time the setting has been used at FBJHN. Fellowship clergy instigated its use.

Missa de Sancta Maria Magdelena is a congregation-friendly work. A few tricky moments might present themselves for voices that require a little extra attention to the modulations and syncopations to achieve confidence.

The Chant Cafe has a review with discussion HERE with references to an ICEL translation applicable to the Ordinary Form of the Mass.

The Missa de Sancta Maria Magdelena is an easy fit in the Liturgy during Epiphanytide. It is an efficient, sober, memorable and dignified setting. The rhythm of the text is natural and predictable.

Copies for purchase are available HERE.

In other news, the Fellowship of Blessed John Henry Newman (at Our Lady of Fatima Parish), Victoria, BC, is offering the public recitation of the Holy Rosary, Saturday mornings at 8:45am prior to Mass at 9:15am. In addition to personal petitions, Epiphanytide weekly petitions include prayers for:
  1. the protection of life, families and marriage (JAN 7).
  2. vocations; in thanksgiving to God for our priests and religious (JAN 14).
  3. Christians persecuted; reparation for sins against the Holy Eucharist (JAN 21).
  4. the conversion of all peoples to Jesus Christ; for Christian unity (JAN 28).
