So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter (2 Thess. 2:15). Guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid the godless chatter and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge, for by professing it some have missed the mark as regards faith (1 Tim. 6:21-22).

Culture War | Summarizing the Struggle

Storm Clouds Gathering 2014

A government that purposefully ignores and suppresses the heritage and culture of the people cannot be trusted with the future of the people.

The twentieth Century should have taught us that governments which attempt to enact laws which effect freedom from religion, or attempt to reduce freedom of religion to a mere freedom of worship, i.e., to worshiping behind closed doors, fade into history soon enough. Though, not after destroying millions of people's lives. Godless communism and fascism in the 20th Century annihilated more people than all the wars, secular and religious combined, of the last 2000+ years. The psychological fallout of that failed experiment in social engineering will be felt for decades and perhaps centuries to come.

The greatest threats to man in the 20th Century were communism and fascism. Both menaces sought to rob man of his God-given dignity. So many people blinded by their willfully narrow perceptions still cling to and promote the evils of socialism, and so many Islamist terrorists are no different that their fascist predecessors. We ignore the lesson of recent history at our own peril.

The culture of hedonism has led to a culture of death. The culture of death has led to a culture of despair. How does one measure despair?—54,559,615 abortions in the USA since Roe v. Wade.

It is highly unlikely that anyone who promotes abortion and/or euthanasia will come to the rescue of the West. What possible interest could people with little or no hope have in promoting the life of a society when they cannot find the heart to protect the lives of the elderly and unborn, nor the hope to live their own lives? Those who have bought into the propaganda of the hedonists not only believe the sun and planets orbit their inflated egos, they believe the entire universe revolves around them. Is it any wonder that depression rules modern man when all he sees is his own imperfect world staring back at him in the bathroom mirror?

A society rid of its conscience cannot support democracy. A constitution or charter of rights and freedoms cannot on its own guarantee the protection of inalienable rights. If the majority of the people are without virtue and the public square is sanitized of the religious voice, constitutions can and will be deliberately misread or ignored in order to serve (very) wrongful purposes.

Are we not seeing the consequences of the loss of conscience?—rising foreign and domestic terrorism; widening economic disparity between rich and poor; loss of freedom of religion; persecution of Christians on a global scale; a president ignoring the law of the land? These are signs that a rot is settling into men's souls, a heroin of sinful pride pouring into our nations' veins that attempts to rob the weak and innocent of any and all self respect.

The storm clouds are gathering, but we need not be overcome by the tempest. Let us show how suffering can have meaning when offered to Christ the light Who illumines the souls of men, Christ Who shares our every burden. May our sufferings become prayers poured into the wounds of Christ. Jesus, Who demonstrated that He is master over the elements, will be our safe harbour in the worst storm. We in the Catholic Church, we who are grafted to Jesus, can be certain the Barque of Peter will safely navigate the stormy seas of this world.

The Church is under attack from within and outside. To think otherwise is dangerously naive. The greater threat comes from within, from heretics, from those who would have us water down the Gospel and take the wide path to perdition. Christ's promise to Saint Peter and his successors is the promise which protects Christ's Catholic Church from destruction. The gates of hell will not prevail because the Catholic Church, the Bride of Christ, is storming those very gates and driving back the devil. She is storming those gates by proposing the Gospel, by insisting on reasoned debate and by challenging relativism, by identifying injustice and by caring for the weak, to mention but a few of the strategies of the Church.

Through the middle ages the Benedictines saved western civilization by conserving and developing classical knowledge and wisdom, thus paving the way for the Renaissance. The did so by developing scriptoria, technology, hospitals, agriculture, schools and by preserving beautiful liturgy. The Liturgy and prayer were and are still at the heart of Benedictine life. We would do well to emulate their way of doing things!

Once again, the future of civilization is in the hands of the Catholic Church. This time the challenge will be engaged on a global scale. The community of faith, hope and love in Jesus Christ is the only institution that can stand up to barbarism and stand against hedonism and relativism. In the West, all other ecclesial communities are compromised by a conformity to the spirit of the times. We can best help them by calling them out of ignorance to embrace the Faith of the Apostles.

The best hope for the protection of the inalienable rights of all people is a people who embrace fully the Catholic Faith in word and deed. If the New Evangelization is anything, it is inviting all people to embrace the saving message and person of Jesus Christ found fully in His Catholic Church. Let us continue to build a culture of life even when the minions of the culture of death want to suppress speech and deed, as in the recent case of the Nanaimo council that violated the Charter rights of christians in that city. One does not need to venture to Iraq these days to get a taste of religious persecution.

Let us propose to our despairing countries and a suffering world the timeless message of hope and love, dignity and peace. That is, the life-giving message of Jesus Who gave Himself to save us from sin and death to enjoy eternal life with God.

"A multitude of wise men is the salvation of the world(.)—Wisdom 6:24. Readers are welcome to make rational and responsible comments. Any comment that 1) offends human dignity and/or 2) which constitutes an irrational attack on the Catholic Faith will not go unchallenged. If deemed completely stupid, such a comment will most assuredly not see the light of day. Them's the rules. Don't like 'em? Move on.
